Thinktank hits 20 years with AUM milestone

Non-bank lender Thinktank has hit two milestones simultaneously: 20 years of operation and $10 billion in assets under management.

Founded in 2006 with an initial specialist proposition exclusively to brokers in commercial property lending, Thinktank has since funded more than $20 billion in residential and commercial property loans.

The milestones follow a record 2026 financial year for the lender, with loan settlements reaching $5.2 billion, up 41 per cent on the previous financial year.

Residential lending accounted for $3.3 billion of settlements, while combined SMSF lending reached $1.1 billion, and traditional commercial lending totalled $640 million.

Thinktank now employs 210 people across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth and has relationships with the major mortgage broker aggregation groups.

From commercial specialist to broader lender

Thinktank CEO Jonathan Street said reaching $10 billion in assets under management (AUM) in the company’s 20th year reflected two elements: diversification as well as a retention of its specialist lending focus.

“Thinktank’s history is in commercial and complex lending to self employed and SME borrowers,” Street said.

“When we started in 2006, our proposition was to bring set and forget commercial lending options with full commissions to the broker market, supported by people who genuinely understood commercial credit and embraced the role brokers play.”

Thinktank has since expanded across commercial, residential, SMSF, and private lending, alongside broader funding and asset management capabilities.

This year, the lender has rolled out new serviceability calculators and deepened its commercial offering through the launch of two new commercial lending products.

Street said the lender’s specialist and complex lending background remained central to its business.

“We’ve always been prepared to understand each scenario and determine what really matters in a sound credit decision while openly sharing our knowledge and insights along the way,” he said.

Broker channel remains a constant

Thinktank has operated solely as a broker-introduced business since it was established.

“Thinktank has always been an exclusively broker-introduced business. We simply would not be what we are today without those brokers who have supported us, trusted us with assisting their clients and grown alongside us over the past 20 years,” Street said.

“Our relationships with brokers and aggregation partners have been central to Thinktank from day one. We’ve always viewed those relationships as partnerships.”

As Thinktank enters its third decade, Street said the lender would continue to evolve while retaining its focus on specialist lending.

“Twenty years has seen enormous change across lending, property, technology and the broker market, and there will unquestionably be plenty more change ahead,” he said.

“As we enter our third decade, our task is to keep evolving while holding onto the things that matter – sound credit perspective, specialist expertise, sharing our experience, strong relationships and being a genuine partner to the people we work with.”
