Westpac appoints permanent head of consumer

The major bank has completed its long search for a consumer CEO.

Carolyn McCann will step into the role permanently, following a few months in the position as interim consumer CEO.

After an internal and external search, Westpac announced the change today (12 August).

McCann has been the acting head of consumer since 12 May, following the departure of consumer CEO Jason Yetton.

Announced in April, Westpac CEO Anthony Miller had faith McCann would thrive in the new position. Now, he said she has stepped up to the task and is confident in giving her the permanent position.

Miller said under her leadership, operations have “dramatically improved”, including customer outcomes and mortgage processes.

He said decision times have been reduced from 12 to five days and scam losses reduced by 40 per cent.

“Carolyn is an outstanding executive and I’ve seen firsthand her ability to engage and galvanise high-performing teams to deliver results,” said Miller.

“Carolyn has brought these outstanding leadership skills to the Consumer role, where she leads a team of highly experienced retail banking executives as well as our superb employees across the country.

"Carolyn’s drive, vision and determination will be an asset to the bank in this role. With the right mix of experience, professionalism, teamwork and energy, we now have the team in place to lead Westpac and I’m excited for what we can achieve together.”

McCann has been in the Westpac Group executive team since 2018. She has experience across operations, customer solutions, fraud prevention, property, procurement and protective services, corporate affairs, brand and marketing, HR, and finance services.

She joined Westpac in 2013 as general manager, corporate affairs and sustainability. McCann brings over 27 years of financial services experience to the new role.
